Do you need a freezer, but you just don’t know where to start? There are many things that you need to decide on when buying a freezer: Such things can include the size, storage capacity, your preferred style or design, and whether you want a warranty or not. This freezer buying guide, brought to you by Mission Restaurant Supply, will explain everything you need to learn in order to buy the right freezer for you.

Step 1: Define the freezer’s purpose, and then choose your style or design.

Is your purpose for buying a freezer for personal (residential) or commercial use? Will it be used for merchandising products or storing bulk food items? Are there certain types or designs that you like or dislike? Whether you are buying a freezer for personal (residential) or commercial use, your potential choices of freezer types will vary. Different freezer types include chest, upright, countertop, glass doors, solid doors, undercounter, worktop, and more. It’s up to you to decide which freezer style meets your purpose and your preference. The type of freezer you select can also determine how much more or less energy efficient it is compared to others. For example, a chest freezer is usually more energy efficient than an upright one.

Step 2: Decide on how much space (storage capacity) you want your freezer to have.

To determine how much space (or storage capacity) that your freezer should have, you need to answer these questions: What are your hours of operation (for commercial use)? How extensive is your menu (for commercial use)? What will you be storing in your freezer? Will this be your only freezer, or do you have more than one for storage? Where will your freezer be located and what are the space limitations? Once you answer those questions, then you’ll have a better idea on how much space or storage capacity your freezer needs.

Step 3:  Determine the overall size of the freezer and its future location.

Before you buy a freezer, you should be sure to determine how much space you have in the freezer’s future location, and then you should choose an appropriate sized freezer that’ll fit in the space you choose for it. It’s easy for people to ignore this step, but if you buy one that is too big, you may have to return it.

Step 4: Determine what features you want the freezer to have.

As explained above, there are a variety of freezers to choose from. Because of this, many freezers will have different features — and this is something you’ll need to review before you decide to buy one. For example, some features include a manual defrost, an adjustable temperature control,  and an interior and operating indicator light.  There are many more features to choose from, and the choice is yours!

Step 5: Decide whether you want a warranty (if it doesn’t already come with one).

There are many things that can go wrong with a freezer. Fortunately, most manufacturers and retailers provide multi-year warranties on new freezers to cover manufacturer defects. Although used commercial freezers may cost less money initially, the future repair costs usually exceed the additional money paid for a new commercial freezer.
