  • Top Chef in San Antonio

    Image

The rumor mill has been churning away for the past few weeks with news that the James Beard and Emmy Award Winning show, Top Chef, has been filming right here in the Alamo City. After much speculation, we now know that this is in fact the case. On August 9th, Bravo confirmed that the hit series is spotlighting three cities in Texas: San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas, for its Top Chef : Texas edition, and it's undoubtedly going to bring with it a great deal of exposure to the lone star state.

La Prensa, a San Antonio based publication quoted our mayor Julian Castro saying, "Top Chef provides an innovative way to promote San Antonio's growing stature as a culinary destination to a broad audience. Our city's historic character and unique cuisine will be highlighted in a creative way."

We couldn't agree more. The local culinary talent here in San Antonio is something that has been a strong attraction and component to our culture, and it's no wonder that successful shows like Top Chef are catching on to the buzz.

San Antonio, home to the newest Culinary Institute of America campus, and to a wide range of multi-talented "culinarians" and chefs, has become a center where culinary arts thrive. We think between the creativity and bustling culinary growth in San Antonio, the laid back vibe in Austin, and the upscale- luxe dining experience in Dallas, that Top Chef will have a great ninth season.

Emeril Lagasse and Hugh Acheson will be serving as the newest judges and they'll be joining show regulars Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons as they journey across Texas. Top Chef : Texas will premier this Fall!

    Stay tuned!

  • Smoking Prohibitions

New San Antonio Smoking Ordinance Starting August 19th, 2011, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District will be implementing a city ordinance against smoking in "all enclosed public places" in the San Antonio area. What does this mean? This means that smoking will be strictly prohibited in public places, including shopping malls, sports arenas, bars, restaurants, museums, laundromats, hotels, theaters, convention facilities, any enclosed place of employment or private business- you name it. There are some restrictions against smoking outdoors, as well. These include Zoo facilities, sports arenas, stadiums, within 20 feet of public transportation stations, and in city-owned parks.

Information for Business Owners For San Antonio (and just about any other city) this prohibition is one that will be controversial and difficult to adhere to, but in the end, it is undoubtedly the best choice, mainly for health reasons. As a business owner, it's important to train and educate your employees on these new implications. It is also required to have visible, conspicuous signage on your establishment that reinstates the smoking ban. The "No Smoking" sign above is on sale at www.missionrs.com for only $4.35. You can buy it here.

Penalties and Consequences This San Antonio Smoking Ordinance is one that should be taken seriously. There are penalties for violating the ordinace, starting with up to $200 for the first violation, up to $500 for a second violation, and up to $2,000 for a third violation (and any violation thereafter.)

  • 2011 NAFEM Show

This week at Mission Restaurant Supply, we are gearing up for the NAFEM trade show that takes place February 10-12th in Orlando, Florida. {NAFEM is short for The North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers.} Every two years, this organization puts on an enormous trade show bringing over 500 manufacturers and 20,000 foodservice professionals to learn about the newest products out on the market. From food preparation to table service, storage, and cooking, it spotlights a wide range of equipment and supply solutions. Furthermore, the NAFEM show is a great educational experience with product galleries and informational sessions available, while it's also an excellent networking opportunity. In Orlando, you can personally meet the movers and the shakers that make this industry so dynamic and innovative. We are also looking forward to the What's Hot What's Cool product gallery which spotlights products in a specialized arena of the foodservice industry from energy efficiency to food safety, eco-friendliness and labor savings, to name a few. The NAFEM executives said it best: "The NAFEM Show brings together our exhibitor's best, so you can bring the best to your business." We're looking forward to seeing the show while striving to be the best we can possibly be for you.
