Tony Gonzalez, owner of Prime Steakhouse and Whiskey Bar in Corpus Christi, Texas, has had quite the journey in life that helped him fulfill his dream of opening a restaurant.
The youngest in his family of five brothers, Tony grew up with a supportive family, including his father who worked in construction and his mother who instilled in him the passion of cooking.

“She would make tortillas,” says Tony, “carne guisada, arroz con pollo, pollo con calabaza, you name it!”
At the age of 18, his love of steaks and cooking for others led his brothers to joke about opening his own restaurant.

Tony continued in his father’s footsteps pursuing a career as a framer in the construction industry. But he always enjoyed cooking at home. “My passion’s on the food,” he says.
Eventually, Tony started a catering business. As he saw success in that, he ventured into operating a food truck. Then eventually, he fulfilled his dream to open a restaurant, a steakhouse.
“What was it going to make us stand out?” To name a few, they mesquite grill all their steaks, use only the best-quality meat, and source products locally and regionally.

They also serve exotic meat including nilgais, Texas red deer, venison, elk, antelope, and quail. The steakhouse also features seafood sourced from Hawaii, Alaska, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Coast, etc.
Of course, customer services is also highly regarded. “We want our customers to feel comfortable, relaxed.”

For those starting in the restaurant industry, Tony says, “my advice would be to plan it very well.” It’s important to make sure that you can offer what the community is looking for. What is something unique that your business can offer?
What has it been like working with Mission Restaurant Supply? “My relationship with Mission has been great!” says Tony. “I have a great sales rep that has been able to help me out, been able to guide me through making sure all the equipment that I needed was available.” It comes down to customer service, reputation, equipment knowledge, and ensuring that equipment is here for the job.
